Costume Design and Technology
About Me
Hello, welcome to my portfolio! My name is Jessica Utz and I am a Costume Designer, a Costume Technician, and a Wardrobe person. I didn't get into theater until about my Junior year of high school, but when I did I fully committed. My senior year of high school I developed an independent study where I designed the costumes for all of my school's theater performances for the year, as well as working in the costume shop at the University of Mary Washington.
I was a Drama Major with a Concentration in Costume Design and Technology at the University of Virginia and graduated in May 2018. While being at UVA I designed for most of the student theater organizations on Grounds as well as having been the Assistant Costume Designer for four of the Drama Department's productions and the Costume Designer for We Are Pussy Riot, or Everything is PR. I was the First Hand for UVA's production of Love's a Bitch. I was the Wardrobe Manager for UVA's Dance Department's Showcase for three semesters as well as being the Wardrobe Manager for all tours that are brought to the department and working wardrobe for several department productions.
I worked at Heritage Theatre Festival in Charlottesville, VA as the Costume Design Assistant for the 2015 and 2016 summers and at the Utah Shakespeare Festival for the 2017 and 2018 summers as a Stitcher and Wardrobe person.
I am currently based out of Washington DC and am most commonly working at Signature Theatre and the Washington National Opera as a Stitcher and at Ally Theatre and NextStop Theatre Company as a Costume Designer. My most recent credits include The Visit (Montgomery College), Hazardous Materials, and The Storehouse (Perisphere Theatre).
